The 1964 vintage Riblet fixed-grip Kehr's Chair will be replaced this summer with a new fixed-grip quad, and we said goodbye to this iconic lift by celebrating last chair on Sunday, April 16. On the last chair was Scott Olsen, Sr. Lift Maintenance Manager at Stevens Pass, and Michael Schmidt, Board President of the Stevens Pass Alpine Club (SPAC). Scott started working at Stevens Pass in November 1986 as a lift operator and has worked on Kehr's throughout his career. He said he loves the simplicity of Kehr's and that he's "really going to miss that." "It means a ton to me to be recognized in such a manner," Scott said about last chair. "To know that my service to the resort has not gone unnoticed!" "Kehr's Chair is a central part of the backbone infrastructure for the SPAC community," Michael said. "It services our training and race venue and has been ridden by generations of SPAC and visiting ski racers." Michael worked alongside 30 members of the extended SPAC community as a part-time lift operator last season and worked Kehr's on weekends. "Being a part-time lift operator has connected me to the Stevens Pass community and given me an appreciation for the beautiful machine that the Kehr's Chair is," Michael said. "It has been my privilege to operate it for a shift every weekend, I’m very excited for what's next!" We'll be sharing updates about construction throughout the summer (including information about the chairs!), so be sure to check back often. ()
Hello everyone, With our 85th season now behind us, I want to take a minute to say thank you. Thank you to our staff, our guests and our partners. This season was not without its challenges, but I am incredibly proud of what this team and our community has done together. Thank you to our staff – to those that came back after some challenging years and to those who joined our team for their first season this year. Thank you to our guests – to those that came back after some challenging years and to those who joined our community for the first time this season. We had ground to make up, trust to rebuild and renewed expectations to meet. We also work closely with our partners at the US Forest Service and Washington State DOT. We work with a great team of people at the USFS and appreciate the collaborative communication we have with the Highway 2 WSDOT crew. We are also home to several non-profit partners including the Stevens Pass Alpine Club (SPAC) and SPAC Freeride. If you participated in the Chuck-A-Duck fundraiser on Sunday, that was hosted by and in support of Outdoors for All, who brings adaptive access to Stevens Pass. We have partnerships with groups like Burton Chill, Edge Outdoors and the Service Board all who support skiing and riding in our community. We also host youth from schools around the state, our Merry Mountain buses on Tuesday and many, many more who call Stevens Pass home. Thank you all for your continued partnership this season. Lastly, being able to connect and communicate with our community is an incredible gift. If you read this blog or interact with us on social media, that is all made possible by our comms team. We appreciate your engagement and I owe sincere thanks to this team for making it possible. As we look towards spring and summer, stay tuned for updates on Kehr’s chair, Bike Park and next winter. I hope to see many of you at Bike Park this summer, but if biking isn’t your thing, please stop in when you’re headed over the pass to grab some ice cream and say hello. Thanks for a great season and SPKA! Ellen ()
And that’s a wrap for our 2022-23 winter season! Thank you for making this such a memorable 85th year, and a big thanks to those of you who braved the elements to join us on closing day. We sure ended with a splash! adamjsanders ()
Cay Heitman started skiing at Stevens Pass when she was 13 years old in 1945, and she said her love for skiing was instant. She shared that passion with her husband, Al, and has passed on her love for the mountains to her six children, 16 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Cay skied with most of her great-grandchildren until just a few years ago when she had foot surgery. Now at 91 years old, she wasn't sure she'd ever ski again. "I still dream about skiing again," Cay said. "My grandkids want to get me back up there and I think I might be able to do it." One of her granddaughters, Christy, let us know that Cay said, "In heaven I'll be skiing at Stevens Pass every day." And we said, "Let's get Cay back to Stevens Pass sooner than that." So we coordinated with over 20 of Cay's family members to get her back to Stevens Pass a few weekends ago. She took her first-ever snowmobile ride from the parking lot to Daisy, and took one last run with the people she loves in the place where her passion for skiing all started. It was an honor for everyone who was involved to be a part of this special moment. Be sure to read Cay's incredible story on our blog: (also linked in our bio!). ()
While we’re still enjoying our last turns of the season, we’re excited to share that our target opening date for summer operations is Friday, June 23. Summer is coming and that means… BIKE PARK! We'll confirm opening date as we get closer, and we’ll have more details to share about our summer plan soon. Until then, we can’t wait to see you at Spring Fest this Sunday, April 16 as we end the winter season with a splash! ()
